Known for his celestial chandelier designs, HANS HARALD RATH was born in 1904 in Vienna into the J. & L. Lobmeyr Austrian glassware dynasty, becoming the fourth generation head of the company. After being gifted a book of distant galaxies by Wallace K. Harrison, architect of the Metropolitan Opera House, Rath designed the auditorium’s sputnik chandeliers that would become one the venue’s most iconic features and significant design projects of the period.
