Belgian designer Martin Margiela debuted his namesake collection in 1989, having first completed his education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and working with Jean Paul Gaultier in Paris. For Margiela, deconstruction is the name of the game. While he oscillates between making his clothes feminine or masculine to varying degrees, the designer’s trademark is deconstructing, reinventing and redefining men and women’s clothes in ways that push the boundaries of fashion. Margiela is credited with redefining what fashion could be.
